Remember When…
San Gabriel High School’s search for its next head football coach didn’t take them far.
Jude Oliva, a 1998 alum, always aspired to be a head coach since joining the Matadors coaching ranks in 2003 as an assistant offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
His dream seven years in the making turned into reality Tuesday when Oliva was introduced as San Gabriel’s head football coach. Oliva takes over for Keith Jones who after 11 seasons at the helm resigned last month.
“I’m ecstatic,” Oliva said. “This is where I graduated and this is where I started my coaching career, and I’m really excited to continue on with the tradition we’ve built over the last couple years.”
Oliva, a senior the spring Jones was hired, quickly showed he was astute to the game and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2004. Oliva, patient and well-liked by players and staff alike, was long expected to take the reigns after Jones’ departure.
“A couple opportunities presented itself,” Oliva said. “I almost took a couple of them. But my heart and soul always has been here at San Gabriel. It was something I kept dreaming of. I stood here because I have a strong loyalty with the kids, administration and a great bond with coach Jones. I had a sense of loyalty toward him.”
Oliva went to College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita before transferring and playing at Dakota State University, then finished his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of La Verne. He currently is serving in his second year as a campus supervisor at San Gabriel, but hopes to land a teaching job there soon.
“They’re going to do their best to accommodate me and help me as much as they can,” Oliva said. “The administration has always been supportive of me since I’ve been here.”
Oliva, who will interview the remaining staff before making any decisions, said he’s looking forward to the challenge of a new season without four-year letterman Isaac Valdez, the school’s longtime prominent quarterback who will have since graduated when the Matadors take to their new synthetic-turf field.
“I feel optimistic of the progress this school has made,” Oliva said. “We’ve built a good foundation here. We’re now contending for league titles and continuously going to the playoffs. With the departure of Isaac Valdez it’ll be tough to replace a kid like that who was the heart and soul and face of this program.”
Oliva was introduced to the team during its sixth-period class by San Gabriel principal Jim Schofield. It was an announcement the players were long and anxiously hoping for.
“I know they’ll be excited,” Oliva said, “because the last couple weeks they’ve been asking and hounding and going after the administration, asking who was going to be the head coach.”
“I truly believe in hard work, dedication, and self-discipline.”
